Lew Weaver - one of the 'original few' has recently been recognised for his contribution to the bike club. Lew's wealth of knowledge, abilities and just plain old approachable, friendly nature has earned him many friends over the years that he has been cycling. In 2011 Stirling Bike Club awarded Lew a 'Contribution to the Club' award in recognition of all he has done for the club over the years.
From Jim Tierney (current Road rep) - "For the last 20 years Lew has led firstly Velo Club Olympia and latterly Stirling Bike club on weekly cycle runs. Lew knew the surrounding roads of Stirlingshire like the back of his hand. A native of Crieff, he knew these roads particularly well. Many a Saturday or Sunday was spent following Lew's wheel. Lew was also the man who introduced Stirling Bike Club roadies to Majorca as well as the delights of the Belvedere bike hotel in Riccionie.
From Owen Philpson - "When I joined Stirling Bike Club in 2008, Lew Weaver was leader of what has now become the 'middle group'. His encyclopaedic knowledge of the back roads and lanes in the area was legendary and because of this, the newer member rarely had to venture onto busy main roads. Lew's routes gave you a great introduction to the area and also wonder whether that, in those early days, I rode some hidden gems that I may not find again for a while! In addition to his quality as a 'human GPS', his assistance in roadcraft meant that the newer club cyclist like myself was quickly integrated into the etiquette and safety aspects required for bunch riding. He has been a great asset and contributor to Stirling Bike Club over the past 10 years."
From Robert Aitken - Lew was one of those riders that all cycling clubs need and struggle to thrive without, a constant calm and strong presence, always there come rain or shine, with a constant high level of fitness, enthusiasm and most importantly, good humour.
In honour of the contribution Lew made to Stirling Bike Club as well as cycling in general in the Stirling area Stirling Bike Club organises the Lew Weaver Memorial Ride each year in May. 2019 will be our eighth Lew Weaver Memorial Ride ride to be held on May 18th.
There will be 3 different routes 35, 55 & 75 miles through his beloved Stirling and Perthshire countryside. All rides leave from the Victoria Hall in Dunblane.
