Just a reminder folks that we also have a plan to visit great roads for riding (if not as warm a climate as Mallorca) on May 4th and 5th to the Applecross peninsula and the legendary Bealach na Ba if you'd fancy joining us...

Helen Gorman: Saturday & Sunday - staying in Lochcarron area
Chris Pendlebury: Saturday & Sunday - staying in Lochcarron area
David Stephens: Saturday & Sunday
Chi kong Cham: Saturday & Sunday - staying in Lochcarron village
Peter Namey: Saturday & Sunday - staying in Lochcarron village

Please add your name to the list and be mindful of securing accommodation as soon as you can as this is the May Bank holiday weekend.

Good to see we have a good group coming together already!
From the SBC Facebook group it looks like there may be interest for a mtb group as well.

Accommodation option in or around the village of Lochcarron can be viewed at www.roomfinderscotland.co.uk/accommodation/lochcarron.php Probably worth trying to stay in or close to the village so we can at least have a social in the evenings!

Hi Chi, Andrew,

Thanks for your replies.

Yes to booking accommodation asap. I have arranged something for Helen and myself in Lochcarron, and will be there for the whole long weekend, i.e. from Friday night to Monday. As I said, there is a variety of options in Lochcarran itself, or there is the Sanachan bunkhouse on the way to the Bealach.

Thanks for the note on that route Andy - that’s one I may explore for a longer trip away.

To keep an interest an ongoing list of where we are with who’s coming along, I will start this below:

Bealach na Ba trip, staying Lochcarron area (4th and/or 5th May)
- Helen Gorman: Saturday & Sunday
- Chris Pendlebury: Saturday & Sunday
- David Stephens: Saturday & Sunday

Cheers all

Chris

It might seem a bit early but I understand accommodation on the west coast is a nightmare (never mind the Bank holiday weekend) if we leave things too late. Time to confirm names, length of stays and decide if there is a collective set of room bookings at particular establishments/location or individuals do this for themselves?

Up for this if dates right

For a long weekend ,one of the routes I have ridden takes in a whole bunch of classic NW climbs:

Day 1. Glen Gary to Skye via Gleneleg climbing Bealach Ratagain and taking the original ferry to Skye
Day 2 - Skye to torridon via the Bealach na Ba
Day3 - Torridon to Inverness
Day 4 - Inverness back to start via South side of Loch ness

You can park in the shinty club at Invergarry - and book accommodation for each night (hostel/hotel,Air Band B

Happy New Year everyone.

Spring is on its way, and it's time to start planning some trips. Helen and I are still up for this Bealach an Ba trip. You can see from Ross' pictures that it's always sunny there*.

There seemed to be enough people up for the weekend of 4th / 5th May.

We propose we base ourselves at Lochcarron, which is about a 4 hour drive. There are places to stay and eat in Lochcarron, and there is the Sanachan bunkhouse on the way to the BnB.

We are going to make the most of the bank holiday weekend, and stay from the Friday to the Monday, so giving us two days of riding. It looks like most people would prefer the Saturday 4th, but for anyone who can only make the 5th we will be there then too; and others might want to stay around for both days.

If anyone wants more information then let us know.

All the best, Chris

*this might not be true. But it could be: it was sunny the time I did it.

Sorry,

Meant to say, Cycle earlier last Month we stayed at Torridon YH.
There is still a lot of work to do at the back end after Applecross climb. A series of small descents followed by sharp short climbs.
Good Fun. A 4h drive from Stirling.

Having visited Applecross many times and ridden the pass six times now in all weathers (high winds are the scariest!) I can thoroughly recommend it as an outing. A great place to stay is Hartfield House hostel in Applecross itself and about a twenty minute walk (or 5 minute ride) from The Applecross Inn!! Stayed there several times and facilities are first class including the kitchen if people want to cook. Besides the pub, there is another good restaurant in the walled garden of Applecross House.

4th May may not be possible for me as I might be going to Mallorca.

Hi all

We have been thinking about suggesting the early May bank holiday weekend, as it gives people the chance to stay up there for longwr if they fancy it.

That would be Saturday 4th May.

People could travel up on the Friday night and just stay for the Saturday, or stay for longer (we will probably look to stay till the Monday).

It is the weekend that some people are going to Majorca (I think). If I understand correctly that’s the Sunday, so this will be perfect last minute training for the Puig!

What do people think of that as an idea?

I'm interested. Know of a large bunkhouse 13 miles north of Applecross, which I can look into if you wish. I've stayed there. Its not posh, but cosy kitchen and lots of bedrooms with bunks. Sleeps around 20.

Good one Chi
Whilst we might want to do the climb at different paces, if people want to carry on and do the loop then we would do that as a group (or a number of groups if appropriate).
At this stage I would just encourage people who may be interested to say so, and we can then work out paces etc. later.

Hi all

As winter sets it, what else to think about other than cycling trips for the summer next year when the weather is (slightly) nicer.

So, Helen and I have been talking about arranging a trip to ride the Bealach na Ba. We had meant to fit it in this year, but since we didn't arrange anything it never happened. So we are looking to start thinking about it now so we can get it in the diary.

Would anyone else be interested in coming along? It would probably involve staying nearby the night before, but some people may prefer the stay there two nights. We would be looking to do the BnB / Applecross / Shieldaig loop, but variations to that are possible.

We can talk logistics once we have an idea of who may be interested.

At the moment just looking for indication of possible interest. Happy to chat to people about it during AGM on Tuesday.

I have put this in road biking, but I am pretty sure there are also off-road options too.

Cheers, Chris and Helen
