I'm interested but my bike isn't being delivered until about 08.30 on Monday morning unless I can get it earlier. I plan to go see them on Sunday pm.

Aye, you're probably right about Formentor - it can be busy for traffic. I understand that they are considering banning cars this summer but probably too late for us.

Anyway, As far as Monday morning goes, here's my number - 07825816296. We've got a villa up the back of Port de Pollensa so happy to meet at the hotel (if I can figure out where it is !) or some other well known landmark.

Anyone else interested in Sa Colobra on Monday morning ?

Sounds like a plan for Monday Alan. Definitely agree an early start would be better.

Re a short ride on Sunday, that's why I discounted Formentor - I thought that by the time we'd get going, it would be pretty busy with traffic. Happy to do that ride on Sunday though if that's not the case.

I'm actually arriving on Saturday (and leaving on Saturday 5th) so I've got a full day on Sunday and intend to go for a decent run that day. If anyone else fancies going out on Sunday give me a shout.

David, I'd be up for Sa Colobra with you on Monday as long as you're ok leaving early (8:30-9am preferably). Reason for that is to avoid the tourist buses that head for Sa Colobra after midday. The first time I was there it was early afternoon and facing a tourist coach on a hairpin is terrifying - they don't take prisoners ! It also ruins any hope you have of ascending in a decent time.

If you're thinking of a short one on Sunday Formentor might be a good choice as it's only about 26 miles there and back from Puerto Pollensa.

We're staying elsewhere too, a hotel in the south of Port de Pollenca. I like to have some plans in place, so have been thinking about what I'd like to do... I fancy:

Sunday: get bike assembled and have a short spin, maybe up to LLuc and back down? Not sure what else would be suitable?
Monday: Sa Calobra
Tuesday: Cap de Formentor
Wednesday: the Andtrax to Pollenca ride
Then that's most of what I want to do ticked off, so happy to freestyle it after that :-)

However the forecast, at the moment, for Wednesday and Thursday is looking a bit rubbish, so might be better to do the Andtrax to Pollenca ride on a good day. Guess we need to play it by ear.

Anyway, that's just a starter for 10, happy to go along with what other folk want to do - though I guess we won't be going out as one big group!

3 sleeps to go.......

As I'm staying elsewhere (although only round the corner from the hotel), I just wanted to check what the likely arrangements are for planning the first rides

Appreciate some of us will be on the same flight out on Sunday morning (from Edinburgh) but that others are flying from glasgow or on the Monday.

So, my questions are:

1. Any plans for a ride later in the day on Sunday once we've arrived and picked up hired bikes etc? Or will the first group rides be on the Monday morning?
2. What's the plan for meeting and agreeing rides on the Monday morning? Just meet at the hotel? If so, what time?

Cheers

Alan

Folks,
Like last year, a few of us have booked into the Aspire Lounge at the airport on the way out. It’s good value compared to trying to sort a breakfast out in the main cattle market and if you need a few coffees to jump start, cheaper too!
The best deal was directly from the Edinburgh Airport site.

The Vanilla route plus Valdemossa gets my vote Dave. That leaves us free to do Sa Colobra on a different day. 10,000ft of climbing in one day is enough !

Last time I did it with Carole and Geoff, started at the Port de Andrax right up coast and finished with Puig Major. Included port de Valdemosa.
There are cut outs if required, first one being at Valdemosa. Usually have lunch in Soller and you can also then decide whether puig major or the switchbacks to Bunyola and Santa Maria. A glorious day out!

OK, so which of the proposed routes do we choose?

The blog author recommends the "vanilla" route plus Port Valldemossa:

www.strava.com/routes/2526235

127 km with 2900 m climbing (gulp)

You will definitely not be on your tod, not done this for a few yrs so definitely doing it. Read an article last week on must do cycle routes and guy reckoned this was best route in the world!
Big DL has made a sensible suggestion, wait till we check weather.

I think the experienced Majorca trippers advised getting there and picking a day where the weather is good (hopefully all days this year!) and then booking the shuttle. Someone else can maybe advise for sure though! Would be good to co-ordinate a day for all those who want to do that route though.

Yeah, definitely the bus. I'm thinking early in the week while the legs are still fresh. What about Monday 30th April ?

According to www.mallorcacycleshuttle.co.uk the bus will pick us up at 0730 and cost is EUR26.50. If anyone knows of a better value alternative please post up.

Clearly my colleague is volunteering to act as ride leader!! :) In which case, he may find the following useful - all my Mallorca routes are available for download from
ridewithgps.com/find?search%5Buser_id%5D=181614
Unless you want to see lots of routes north and south of Glasgow, the Alps, the Canaries, etc, I suggest you restrict the list by searching for routes in the vicinity of Pollensa or Alcudia.

Cheers,
Not the ride leader

Not sure what the plans are, routes-wise, but I found this blog, which seems to have a lot of good ideas, and links to Strava and GPS files for the routes:

After a great sales job by Heather M at the weekend, I've managed to kill 2 birds with one booking.....

Have booked up to stay for 11 days flying out the same day as the club (with wife & daughter) to have some R & R after the riding is done. I get a week of cycling and the bonus of missing a week of shopping for "bargains"!! Have booked an apartment literally round the corner from the Azul so hope to still make some of the social side of the trip too.

Now starts the diet as I believe there may be just one or two hills around?

So now......

The list:
Graeme N and Dougie T
Chris S and Norrie P
Duncan B and Stuart T + 1
Erch and Maggie
Graeme M & Graham B
Simon S & Colin C
Lynne & Garry
Alan M (but staying elsewhere)

Folks i was asked last year by some for recommendations for reliable bike hire with decent bikes and prices. Best place in Puerto pollensa is pro cycle hire. Guys name is Bruce Griffiths. Get him in Facebook. Tell him you spoke to Andy Hain owner of Leslie Bikes who recommended him. Nice bikes and reasonable price. www.procyclehire.com/if

Alternatively try pollensa cycling .....email them the ladies name is Saray ....mention Andrew Alexander Velo club Europe Majorca recommended them
www.pollensacycling.com/

There are many hire shops out there including the Bike rooms if you are after some serious bling aka Team Sky Pinarrello www.pinarelloexperience.com/

The first recommendation gets excellent reviews by Andy owner of Leslie Bikes as i believe Team Leslie use them year after year without any incident.

P.s. I am not on commission for any of them honest !
Hope to see as many of the club members out there in 2018 as possible.

In my opinion my snoring is no louder than my wife's so I'm sure you'd be able to bear it Graham.

I've also been given the go-ahead so am looking to find a room mate. How loud do you snore Graeme? I'm happy to put up with it if you can put up with my farting!

So Mrs M says I can go on two conditions.

1 find someone willing to share a room and put up with my snoring

2 (an exact quote) get off my lardy arse and do some cycling

Folks,
After a very successful SBC trip to Majorca this year with 30 odd of us enjoying a fantastic week of cycling in the sun, we are heading back in 2018!
We are booking again with Jet2.com , flying out on:
29th April 2018
from Edinburgh or Glasgow, (whatever suits you best)
for a week, (more or less days to suit what you of course), returning on 6th May.
We are staying at
Puerto Azul Suite Hotel, Puerto Pollensa
The half board deal is coming in between £520 and £570 for the week - a proper bargain.
This year the availability changed a few times, as the hotel tends to release rooms in chunks to maintain their prices. Don't panic if availability vanishes early - it should re-appear. (However, don't hold me to that and get booked ASAP!)
Like the last 2 years, we ask that you find a room mate and book independently. That prevents anyone being burdened with hoards of bookings.
If you want to hire a bike rather than take your own, book soon. Although the island was quiet this year, most hire shops had sold out of bikes. (Our booking is the week after the 312, so it will be quiet again next year.)
Lets see how many we can get out this year. We ad 3 or 4 groups out each day this year, with a suitable ride for all. (Including the famous Lochs and Glens group - aka Last of the Summer Wine Tours inc.) It was a fantastic trip all-round.
We already have a handful of rooms booked - get on it!
Hotel details HERE
Jet2 has a great smartphone app for booking, or you can call them on 0800 408 0778.
